Behind The Scenes

Stories, anecdotes, and photographs from the crews, guides, and communities who make movie magic happen across Africa.

Dawn rig on the Mara plains

Camera crews rose at 4am for weeks to catch the exact amber light Sydney Pollack wanted over the Maasai Mara. Local spotters — many of them Maasai herders — became unofficial assistant directors, predicting where the light and the herds would meet.

Anecdote

The arena that wouldn't crumble

The mud-brick arena built outside Ouarzazate for Gladiator was meant to be torn down after the shoot. Local artisans had built it so well — using the same techniques as the eleventh-century kasbahs — that it survived two decades of desert storms and is now a stop on every film tour.

War rigs in the dunes

Namibia's Dorob coast doubled as the post-apocalyptic wasteland. Between takes, the stunt drivers ran dune-driving clinics for the local crew — skills that several of them now use guiding photography tours through Sossusvlei.

Feeding a five-hundred-person crew on the crater rim

When the big documentary units camp on the Ngorongoro rim, an entire village economy follows: cooks from Karatu, drivers from Arusha, fixers who can source a replacement lens hood two hundred kilometres from the nearest camera shop. Ask any producer — the real magic of shooting in Tanzania is the logistics people you never see on screen.

Anecdote

Sigourney's porters

During Gorillas in the Mist, the production hired dozens of porters from villages around Volcanoes National Park. Several went on to become the park's first generation of professional trackers — and their children now lead the very treks our travelers book.

Table Mountain, dressed as another planet

Cape Town Film Studios can put an alien city, a nineteenth-century whaler, and a superhero set within a mile of each other — all with Table Mountain waiting just out of frame. Visiting crews call the mountain 'the extra that photobombs everything'.
